When we look at a premium property in the historic heart of Palo Alto, we see more than beautiful architecture. We see an electrical ecosystem. In a city built on technological breakthroughs, the demand on a home’s infrastructure is shifting faster than ever.
A recent project in the Crescent Park neighborhood perfectly illustrates this shift. The client—a high-profile tech executive—called us with a straightforward request: install a high-amperage Tesla Wall Connector to charge their new vehicle at maximum speed. However, as any experienced automation engineer knows, “straightforward” requests on luxury estates often hide complex infrastructural puzzles.
The Hidden Bottleneck
The property is a stunning 5,400-square-foot estate featuring multi-zone HVAC units, a dedicated server room, high-end appliance clusters, and a heated pool system. Upon conducting a comprehensive National Electrical Code (NEC) load calculation, the real challenge emerged.
The main 200-Amp electrical panel was already operating near its safe capacity during peak hours. Adding a continuous, high-amperage 48-Amp Level 2 EV charging load meant that on a hot summer afternoon, with the air conditioning running at full blast, the system risked overloading the main breakers.
The traditional solution from a standard electrical contractor would be a complete utility service upgrade to 400 Amps. In Palo Alto, this route means thousands of dollars in utility fees, extensive trenching across manicured landscaping, and weeks of waiting for city permits.
We took a smarter, engineering-first approach.
Engineering the Dynamic Workaround
Instead of throwing money at a massive utility upgrade, we decided to solve the problem with software and smart hardware. We deployed an Emporia Vue Gen 3 Smart Home Energy Monitor directly inside the main distribution panel to track real-time electrical draw across the property.
Next came the physical installation. As captured in the project file, the exterior facade of the home demands strict aesthetic discipline. To run the heavy conductors from the panel to the driveway, we bent and routed industrial-grade, heavy-duty EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) conduit perfectly flush along the trim line of the classic white shingle siding.

Beside the charger, we mounted a NEMA 3R weatherproof disconnect switch box for code compliance and manual safety isolation. Every element was aligned geometrically with the home’s dark shutter trim, ensuring the hardware looks like an intended architectural feature rather than an afterthought.
The real magic happens behind the scenes. We hardwired the Gen 3 Tesla Wall Connector onto a dedicated 60A circuit to unlock its maximum charging capability—adding roughly 44 miles of range per hour. To protect the estate from overloads, we configured a dynamic load-balancing protocol. The smart energy monitor continuously reads the total household draw. If the estate’s power consumption nears 85% of the panel’s maximum capacity, our automation script instantly communicates with the vehicle to scale down its charging amperage.
Once the peak household loads drop—such as late at night when the family goes to sleep—the system automatically restores full 48A power to the vehicle.
Seamless Integration, Zero Compromise
The physical deployment, calibration of the CT monitoring clamps, and firmware scripting were completed in exactly one business day.
By blending industrial-grade electrical precision with intelligent load-balancing software, we delivered a flawless charging experience. The client’s vehicle charges at maximum speed when it matters most, the home’s main power grid remains completely stable, and the historic architectural beauty of the property is fully preserved—all without a messy, expensive utility upgrade.
